WWII US F4U-1A CORSAIR, Ira Kepler, Ultimate Soldier XD, 21st Century Toys, 1:18 Scale Fighter Plane W/Figure. New in Box.
This is the Ultimate Soldier’s 1:18th scale F4U-1A Corsair from from 21st Century Toys. It is painted in the markings of United States ace fighter pilot, “Ira Kepford.” The model has an opening cockpit with detailed interior, rivet and panel lines, retractable landing gear, and pilot figure. Wingspan is approximately 24 inches. The production run for this plane ended in 2004.
The F4U-1A Corsair first flew in 1940. It had a massive engine which required a larger than normal propeller. To preserve the structural strength of the landing gear and control-ability in landing, it was designed with the distinctive gull wing, thereby placing the body of the plane in a higher position to accommodate the propeller. Another unique feature was how these wings could fold-up so it took up less room on an aircraft carrier.
Corsairs were flown in combat by the U. S. Marines, U S Navy, the Royal Navy and the New Zealand Air Force. The name Corsair became synonymous with the names of Marine and Navy Aces like Lt. Col. Gregory (Pappy) Boyington, Lt. Ken Walsh, Lt. Bob Hansen, CDR Tommy Blackburn, Lt. Ira (ike) Kepford.
